ASB Herne — Opening of a new day care centre in Tumahole

The ASB makes a significant contribution to public welfare not only in Herne and Gelsenkirchen, but also in South Africa, where it has operated as a non-profit organisation for many years.

Around 120,000 people live in the township of Tumahole in the Parys district, 130km south-west of Johannesburg. Together with a South African partner organisation, ASB has operated there for years, and set up the “Lehlohonolo” (Happiness) Day Care Centre, which stands in the centre of this shanty town. It is now the responsibility of the local organisation SASO (the South African Samaritan Organisation) to operate the centre. Every day, around 150 children, aged between 2—16 years receive care (clothing, food) and medical treatment (vitamins, tablets).

In July 2007, the “Relebohile” Day Care Centre was opened, funded by the ASB. In the preceding months, an increasing number of children came to the construction site to see the builders‘ progress.

The interest in this new centre was great, because the number of children and young people who would be able to benefit from it had steadily increased.

The centre is managed locally by a seven-member team from the association “Relebohile”, which consists of staff and long-term local support. In addition, the project has become part of the weltwärts programme. SAGE Net sends two volunteers a year to Tumahole.
